The Week - Unfortunately, this has encouraged Washington's instincts to deepen military ties with other states in the region. China perceives that as an effort at containing Chinese power. It has also fed a new round of China-bashing and overhyping of the potential threat from China. It almost doesn't matter which presidential candidate wins in November. Tensions between the U.S. and China seem more likely to increase in the years to come unless something major changes.

ContributorNetwork - COMMENTARY | Against the backdrop of the coming of Women's History Month in March -- a national (and worldwide) celebration and recognition of the contributions and accomplishments of women of our nation and throughout world history -- it seems Republicans are going for broke in a relentless and unbridled assault on the progress and well-being of women in America. Of course, Republicans have spent the last several decades (intensified in the last several years in Republican controlled state legislature across the country) trying to overturn, significantly undermine and/or eviscerate arguably the most significant judicial decision of the last half of the twentieth century -- the landmark Supreme Court decision Roe v Wade.

AP - A united House Republican leadership surrendered crisply and cleanly on legislation to extend expiring payroll tax cuts for 160 million Americans, skipping most if not all of the self-defeating drama that accompanied their far noisier retreat on the same issue late last year.

The Week - Under new legislation, the jobless will have to undergo drug testing in certain cases. If Republicans had gotten their way, it would have been all casesIn a rare show of bipartisanship, Congress passed a measure extending unemployment benefits through the end of 2012 — but the two parties made compromises to get the legislation through. Controversially, for instance, the bill allows states to subject certain applicants to drug testing: Namely, those who were laid off for flunking an employer's drug test, and those seeking jobs that require such tests. An earlier version passed by the GOP-controlled House would have allowed states to drug-test all applicants. Should Republicans have stuck to their guns?
